Attendance Policies

Attendance in all your classes is important for many reasons:
  • You are here to learn, and you can do that best if you come to class every day.
  • If your attendance is satisfactory, you will receive a certificate at the end of the program. Students who miss more than 14 hours (3.5 days) of core classes will not receive a certificate and may be disqualified from the program.
  • If you have a student visa, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires you to attend classes regularly. We don’t want you to have any visa problems.

Students are expected to be present from the first day of class until the last, unless they have made special arrangements with us ahead of time. If a student has not attended class within the first two days of class, he/she will be considered a no-show and may be dropped from the program. If you have a special situation that affects your attendance, please tell us.

Attendance and Lateness Policy
All of your teachers will keep a record of your attendance. If you are late for class, they will also keep a record of this. This is the lateness policy for all of UCI Continuing Education's ESL classes:
  • Less than 15 minutes late = Tardy (late)
  • 15+ minutes late = 1 hour absence
  • 3 Tardies (Lates) = 1 hour absence
  • More than 14 hours absence = No certificate. Possible disqualification.

If you miss more than 14 hours in all your classes combined:
  • You will not receive a certificate of completion.
  • You may be disqualified from the Conversation & Culture program.
  • If you are disqualified, you will not be allowed to return to any ESL program at UCI Continuing Education in the future.

If you want to know how many hours of absence we have recorded for you so far, send an email to ESL-attendance@uci.edu. You will receive a prompt reply telling you your hours of absence.

If you are sick for more than a day or two, or if you have some special problem, please talk to Marla Yoshida (yoshidam@uci.edu) or use the "Contact Us" form to let us know what's wrong. We want to help you as much as we can!
