Testing & Placement for Business English

Placement in the BE program
There are no separate levels in the Business English program. Participants need to have an intermediate level English language proficiency or higher to attend the BE Program. This can be demonstrated in several ways:
  • Take our placement test on testing day and score at an intermediate level or higher
  • Show that you have successfully completed Level 4 or higher in the UCI 10-Week Intensive ESL program or Level D or higher in the 4-Week Conversation & Culture program.
  • Submit a score for a standardized test: TOEFL PBT (450), TOEFL iBT (45), TOEIC (500), or IELTS (4.5).

However, you will be automatically accepted into the BE program if you show that you have been accepted to either of the following:
  • An Accelerated Certificate Program (ACP) at UCI Division of Continuing Education
  • An MBA program at UCI or another university

Our Placement Test
New students in the BE program take the Cambridge Michigan English Placement Test, which tests listening, grammar, vocabulary, and reading. The test contains 100 multiple-choice questions and takes about 65 minutes to complete. The EPT is a long-established, well-respected test used by many English language programs.

The test includes two sections:
  1. Listening: 20 multiple-choice questions. Students listen to a short recorded statement or question and choose the best response. They mark their answers on Scantron answer sheets. This section takes about 12 minutes.
  2. Grammar/Vocabulary/Reading: 80 multiple-choice questions. Students read sentences with missing words and choose the best answer to fit in the blank. According to the University of Michigan English Language Institute (the creators of the test), the items test "grammar in conversational contexts, a selection of high-frequency vocabulary to fit the context of single sentences, and reading comprehension of sentences." This section takes 50 minutes.
