We offer a choice of specialized courses. Not all courses are offered every month.
American Culture The goal of the American Culture course is to help students learn about and understand selected topics in the culture of the US and California. Students will create a final project, such as a poster, presentation, skit, or video, to explain an aspect of American culture, such as a famous person, holiday, custom, or event. |
What will you do in class?
This will be a very active class. You will learn about cultural topics, watch short videos, and do a lot of discussion and work in pairs or groups. You may talk to American visitors to your class or go out on campus to interview people.
The teaching methods that your teacher uses will be interactive and communicative. This means that you will have many chances to speak and participate during class in order to improve your English ability--talking to classmates and discussing interesting topics, brainstorming and planning a project, and discussing what you've learned.
What will you be graded on?
In your Reading/Writing class, your grade will be based on these things:

English for Science & Technology
The goal of this course is to help students improve their ability to use English in discussing and working with several science- or technology-related topics. They will learn and use new vocabulary related to the topics and practice describing processes, causes and effects, or problems and solutions related to the topics.
What will you do in class?
This will be a very active class. You will learn about several topics related to science and technology, watch short videos, and do a lot of discussion and work in pairs or groups. You will also have an opportunity to do hands-on projects related to the topics you’ve learned about as a means of increasing your subject-matter understanding and language ability.
The teaching methods that your teacher uses will be interactive and communicative. This means that you will have many chances to speak and participate during class in order to improve your English ability--talking to classmates and discussing a reading or video, brainstorming and planning a project, and discussing what you've learned.
What will you be graded on?

Here is an explanation of our grading scale. It is used in all of UCI Continuing Education's English programs.
You must earn an average of 70% or higher to pass the class.
