Irvine: "America's Safest City" for an Eighth Consecutive Year

June 11, 2012

The Federal Bureau  of Investigation (FBI) has released crime data for 2011, indicating that Irvine has the lowest crime rate in the US among cities with more than 100,000 residents. The rate of violent crime in Irvine remained virtually unchanged in 2011, making this Irvine’s eighth consecutive year as America's safest city. Also noteworthy, the violent crime rate reported in both 2010 and 2011 was the lowest in the city’s history.

“This is history-making”, said Mayor Sukhee Kang. “Eight straight years as the country’s Safest City is truly  something to celebrate. Public safety is a commitment we do not take lightly. The well-being of our community is the cornerstone of our  success.”

“I remain very proud of the men and women of our department," said Irvine Chief of Police David Maggard. “Their efforts as crime fighters and community partners make a difference in Irvine every day.”

Irvine attributes its long-standing success to a combination of dedicated and professional law enforcement personnel, an engaged and caring community, and city leadership whose focus on community safety is unparalleled.
