Grades & Grade Reports

At the end of each program, you will receive letter grades to let you know how well you’ve done in your classes. This is our grading scale:

Passing Grades

98-100% = A+
93-97% = A
90-92% = A-
88-89% = B+
83-87% = B
80-82% = B-
78-79% = C+
73-77% = C
70-72% = C-

Non-Passing Grades

68-69% = D+
63-68% = D
60-62% = D-
0-59% = F

How will your teachers determine your grades?

At the beginning of each class, each teacher will give you a syllabus--a paper with important information about the class. The syllabus tells you what you will study in the class, what we expect you to learn, the kinds of assignments and tests you will have, and what you need to do to get a good grade. Your teachers all want you to do well in your class and will do their best to help you understand the class material, practice it effectively, and do well on quizzes and tests.

Your grade will be based on these types of things:
  • Quizzes or tests
  • Written assignments or speaking presentations
  • A final test, project, or presentation

Promotion to the next level in Conversation & Culture
  • Students who have successfully completed all classes in one 4-week (or two, 2-week programs) Conversation & Culture program will be placed in the next level if they continue to the next program. If you prefer to remain in the same level, you should talk to your teacher or the program coordinator.
  • If you have any questions, or if you think there has been a mistake in your level placement, please talk to the Conversation & Culture Coordinator (yoshidam@uci.edu) or use the "Contact Us" tab.

Successful completion of the program and certificates of completion
  • All students who successfully complete the program receive a certificate at graduation. In order to receive a certificate, you need to:
              1. have fewer than 14 hours of absence in all core classes together
              2. earn passing grades in all your classes
  • Students who miss more than 14 hours of core classes during the month are considered not to have successfully completed the program, and they will not receive a certificate of completion or be promoted to the next level. Full-time students who miss more than 14 hours of class are also in violation of the requirements of their visa and may be dismissed from the program.
  • If you want to know how many class hours you've missed so far, send an email to our attendance team: ESL-attendance@uci.edu.
  • Certificates are given out at our graduation ceremony in the afternoon on the last day of class. If you do not attend the ceremony, you can pick up your certificate at the front desk in Building CE 5 or ask us to mail it to you.

To see your grades after the program ends...

You will be able to see your grades online about a week after the program ends. UCI does not send out paper copies or e-mail reports of grades. To see your grades, go to this website: https://ce.uci.edu/courses/secure/login.aspx. Click on "My Account" and then “Create new account” and type in the requested information. Be sure to type your name exactly the same way it is in UCI’s official records and on your ID card. Remember your password! After you’ve signed in, click on “View unofficial transcript/grade cards” on the left to see your grades. If you have any trouble, we’d be glad to help you at the front desk in Building CE 3.

If you think there's a mistake in your grade...

If you disagree with the grade you received, you should do this:
  • Ask your teacher why you received the grade. (Don't be afraid. It's completely OK to do this. Your teacher won't mind.)
  • If you can't reach your teacher, or if you still think there's something wrong, talk to the Conversation & Culture Coordinator. We'll check into it. You can use the "Contact Us" tab on this website.
